Lieu
Name: The Lieutenant Nickname: Lieu (Pronounced Lou) Date of Birth: Probably Spring 23rd, although there is room for debate. Age: 25 Gender: Female Hometown: Port Fellan Place of Residence: The Dirty Star Occupation: Merchant/Ship owner Role: None, for tis an original character nee?
Likes: Children (oddly enough) Swimming Heights Money Baths, sadly not really available any more Home-made baking (fresh), a precious commodity in her profession Silkworms, even if she's never even seen one, must be a trauma thing Excessively well crafted cutlery, what means is food if you can't show it a good time? Feathers, would wear one but lacks an appropriate hat Dancing, but only when she does it. There’s still some grace left in her bony frame Anything spicy Anything alcoholic
Dislikes: Small Dogs Teenagers Being watched People who call everyone dude Birds, noisy pests that they are Dancing, but specifically when other people do it. Badly Anything overly sugary, the taste just doesn't agree with her teeth Anything alcoholic (it's a love hate thang) Anything flat when it could be fizzy Bad musicians
Hobbies: With little other to do around the ship but yell the occasional order, Lieu has gotten pretty into trawler fishing, although she isn't anywhere near good at it. In the last three years her catches still only number thirteen, not counting any bits of debris that the lines occasionally snag in shallower water. Asides from that Lieu tends to fill a life with a mixture of planning, reading, and simply watching, as life on board can be very interesting to say the least. Not the most conventional hobby, but she enjoys it, so who are you to judge?
Strengths: Dexterity Stamina Can spit reeeeeeeeeal far Has very good balance, especially at heights Seems to always land on her feet
Weaknesses: Bad long distance sight Terrible with instruments, must be genetic Has a tendency to sleep at the stupidest of times Can't cook worth a yeah Can't seem to make a good first impression Kittens, proximity is inverse to her intelligence
Fears: Mirrors Violence, not a helpful fear, but then again is there anyone with a useful one? Genuine affection Living on land Bugs of the many legged variety
Good/Bad Habits: Doesn't have a sleep pattern, naps at all and any times Tends to ignore most stuff relevant to a conversation Plays with her food, it’s all about the experience Can be overly vulgar, that’s living with sailors for you Rarely bothers to wash
Personality: Before the time, Lieu was a foppish, girly excuse for a teenager, constantly joking, singing, and generally playing hell with the rest of the crew. Pranks and trickery were abound, with many the deckhand finding himself strung up by what had previously seemed like a harmless coil of rope, others such as the galley cook finding the most innocent bag of flour to suddenly be beset by spontaneous combustion, erupting over him in a choking white shower.
Ironically, in more recent days these traits have been even more pronounced in nature, and it is this pronunciation that now serves to constantly strain and infuriate the rest of crew. Now more or less immersed in her own little world of fun and tomfoolery, Lieu is at most times reduced to a near childlike state, one that displays complete apathy to any means rather than its own. Anything constituting a useful directive is all but an impossible task, as the lines continually blur between useful for the crew, and useful for Lieu. An infantile sequence of banter is often the most that can be distracted, and the woman is often too distracted with the simplest of things to even bother answering. Instead of doing anything of actual use, she spends most days concocting increasingly elaborate and overly ambitious traps for the unfortunate and stressed crew, almost to the point of compromising any legitimate duties a particular person may very well have.
In recent days these extracurricular activities have caused some genuine concern, especially after an attempted bungee plunge trap left the ship with a broken foremast and a severely concussed cook. Ever since then, a rota has been set up, an extra hand hired on, and a system put in place by which one man spends time of every day following the Lieutenant around deck from a distance, slowly disabling anything dangerous that she happens to construct.
Still, there is a reason for the crew not jettisoning their leader within the first month of her ‘recovery’, as there are other times. At those times Lieu seems to snap out of it as it were, becoming at least understandable enough to discuss the situation. At these times it becomes obvious that she remains the true leader of the decision, even if she is relegated more or less to long term planning and guidance. Actual day to day activities require more or less no input anyway thanks to the deck crew, there are other ranking officers on the ship able to plot their course, and yet others capable of bartering whatever it happens to be that the ship is presently flogging. This season its parasols, get ready, they’re gonna be huuuuge. Seriously, you’ll be lining up for them all down the street. Anyway, back on topic, nothing bad has managed to come from her continuing leadership, so the crew remain content, their wallets reassuringly heavy. But everything could change.
Still, don't let any of this fool you, if you piss Lieu off (as hard as it is to do), you face the same penalties you would recieve from any other offended party. Boastful, brash, and damningly superior, an angry Lieu can be a force, verbally. The woman has long since learned her lesson in the physical reality of things, but given she has a whole crew to command, there is little need for her to provoke anything. That being said, lonely Lieu is cowardly Lieu, so one on one is your best bet if you're in for roughing the woman up. But who could be so cruel?
Marital Status: Single Sexuality: Heterosexual, though there are doubts... Turn Ons: same sorta height doesn't flinch handsome, not a fat ass (yeah like she has a chance) people big on the sea, because she isn't leaving it
Turn Off's: Body Hair/Odour, seriously, she gets enough of this around the crew Clingy people, there is such a thing as personal space regardless of who you are Lazy people, like, really lazy. Lazy as in Laaaaaaaaaazy Stressful folk, or those given to a nervous disposition People who want to stay on land. Inconvenient
Hair Color & Style: Possessed of that annoying, coppery coloured hair that can't decided whether its blonde or brunette, Lieu employs its corona as a frame to her face, partly as means to de-emphasise it, but also because it just seems to work. The seasons also play a part in its presentation (or lack thereof), with summers glare drying it to a dirty yellow, and the harshness of winter elevating it to a deeper brown. Eye Color: Her one remaining eye stands out as a contrast to the rest of her face, assuming the status of her best feature. A clear, silky blue emanates from this orb, whilst its twin remains grey and lifeless, streaked with red to mark the scarred remains of broken vessels. Many would employ an eye patch in such a situation, but Lieu instead employs the eye itself as a reminder of an old mistake. Height & Weight: 5'7", about 114lbs Body Type: In the past Lieu was athletic, supple and flexible, the match of any gymnast whilst navigating the ships rigging. Sadly these days have faded alongside her injury, leaving behind a gaunt and bony figure that never quite recovered from the fever that came with it. Whilst still as sure-footed on the deck as forty feet above it, Lieu holds little hope that she will ever regain her past strength. Marks/Tattoos/Piercings: Thanks to her life at sea, Lieu has picked up the odd marking here and there, though not to a silly extent. A small blue snake adorns her left wrist, a tear-drop of green slips from her eye, and a strangely layered design completely encapsulates her right hand, giving people a wonderful first impression. Style of Dress: Even before the scars, Lieu was never very ladylike so to say. In all honesty she had little opportunity to cultivate a love of clothing, in such a profession its employment is little more than an exercise of modesty, designed to be light, functional, and almost never elaborate. The standard clothing of the seas, white canvas fills what passes for a wardrobe, with a few splotches of black standing as a relentless contrast, and the only footwear takes the limited form of sandals. Despite this, there is one item of clothing that Lieu holds dear, for therein lays the origin of her new moniker, and it is constantly found draped over her. The jacket itself acts as very much as a refuge, its enveloping size and reassuring wideness of shoulders indicating a comforting cut designed for a different gender, and its deep army green blatantly standing at odds with the naval lieutenant insignia. Insignia belonging to the Sri Lankan army of course, but still valid insignia, or at least enough to give a person the authority to run a (reasonably) simple merchant ship.
Background: Many people cherish certain memories, early birthdays, learning to ride a bike, their first crush, that sort of thing. To Lieu, it was as if they never existed.
It all began with a light that much is certain, a light that tore out of the darkness and lit the world on fire, carving out all that had come before. Or so she likes to think. In reality the knife that stole her memories was a rather mundane object, plainly hilted against an old, worn out blade, dull and misleading in its intent. Each person only has a certain amount of fights in them, and on the day of that particular bar fight Lou realised she had fought her last. Still, she was but a child, and one can hardly find sympathy for the cruel touch of fate. Waking up afterwards had been the easy part, the room silhouetted in the dull light of a swinging lantern, oddly lopsided somehow. Exactly what was wrong with it was something she failed to fathom at the time, only later learning why her left eye didn't seem to open, why her nose couldn't sneeze regardless of the urge, and most importantly why the left side of her face remained cold and unresponsive. Alas, there a few doctors in such a port, and though the crew did their best, the eye couldn't be saved, remaining frozen and lifeless from that day onwards. The rest of the face fared little better, slowly healing into a twisted scowl that even today is plagued by a dull pain, leaving the faint resemblance to a painting that a frustrated artist has furiously crossed out. Still, over time her health improved, although it remained a shadow of her former vivaciousness, and without being literally nursed back to health by her second in command, she probably wouldn't have made it at all.
The memories themselves never really bothered to return in the end, departing for warmer climates once the true scope of the change was brought to light. Awakening from her dormant state, Lieu found herself in an alien environment, devoid of any knowledge that could be of aid. Beneath her the floor refused to set itself aright, a constant rushing sound hovered on the periphery of one’s hearing, and a strange briny smell assailed what remained of her nose, sensations that were both distant and yet as close to normal as any person could fathom. In those first moments she was nameless, a blank canvas per se, devoid of any identity beyond that imposed by fear, and the canvas could very well have been left unmarked, if it weren't for the sudden appearance of a burly crewman at the cabin door. Remarkably a salute was the form of greeting, along with an enquiry that formed her moniker from then on.
"Beg Pardon Lieutenant, but the boson has something he wished to draw to your attention"
This was Nicholas, the Sub-Lieutenant as it were, her second command, and a valuable ally in her early days of command. Six months was a long time to spend out of the loop, and the ship she returned to had been left almost destitute from the financing of her long illness, and loyalty has its limits when men have slack purses. It was Nicholas that helped her with the first orders in those harsh days, before her instincts returned, and soon the ship was back in business, sailing south to flog a new lumber shipment to a growing town. The reassuring gold soon averted any thoughts of mutiny, buying precious time for any memories to return, and thankfully, over the weeks a few crept back to their original nest. Practical rather than informative, her knowledge slowly returned, navigation, lift, relative velocity, wind shear and the like, but most importantly of all came the terminology. Now came the return of authority, gone were the fearful, vague orders, replaced by a whole slew of nautical jargon. No longer were her orders questioned at every turn, and whilst far from unanimously popular amongst the crew, she found herself once again accepted as leader. In the coming years life returned to a semblance of its previous state, though long gone was the jovial atmosphere of the original, the crew reduced to praying for the abatement of their commanders childish state, though they remain secure in the knowledge that their purses are somewhat full.
